What the pilot means for shift workers
Rota-based roles are the hardest case for a shorter week. Three services that already tried it describe what changed.

Rota-based roles — ambulance crews, custody staff, ward nurses — are consistently the hardest case for any four-day week proposal, since coverage cannot simply compress into fewer, longer days the way office scheduling can.
Three services that piloted shorter weeks in shift-based roles elsewhere report similar adjustments: overlapping handover windows were shortened, and on-call rosters absorbed some of the gap rather than overtime pay.
Staff surveyed after those pilots reported higher satisfaction, but two of the three services flagged early recruitment difficulty for the reduced-hour rotas, since take-home pay per shift effectively rose relative to standard rotas elsewhere in the same sector.
