Eleven regional museums have agreed to circulate works between their own collections for an upcoming touring season, rather than each separately negotiating loans from national collections as they have in previous years.
The arrangement cuts insurance and transport costs sharply, since works move between a fixed, known set of venues rather than in and out of a national lender's own logistics chain each time.
Organisers say the approach also lets smaller museums headline a touring show with pieces from a peer institution's collection that would rarely be offered to them individually.
