Several regional grid operators have begun publishing hourly carbon-intensity data for their networks as an open feed, letting connected appliances and industrial users shift demand toward hours when the grid mix is cleanest.
Two of the operators have committed to moving from hourly to five-minute resolution within the next year, which would let faster-responding loads — battery charging, some industrial processes — react to shorter-lived dips in carbon intensity than the current feed allows.
Developers have already built several independent tools against the existing feed, none of which the grid operators commissioned directly.
