A freight rail corridor carrying roughly a fifth of the region's bulk freight has reopened after two years of structural repairs to a viaduct section that had restricted the line to a single track since an inspection flagged the damage.
Operators say capacity will return gradually rather than immediately, as scheduling and rolling stock that shifted to road transport during the closure is phased back over the autumn.
Some of that diverted freight is expected to stay on road permanently, according to two of the logistics firms that adjusted their routes during the closure.
